The all-year-round Saturday market is one of the things that really drew us to Estremoz. As fans of everything vintage, second-hand, retro and recyclable – not to mention the love of a good bargain – a trip into town to go to the market is a real treat. If you find yourself in the Alentejo it is something you must not miss!

The stallholders sell everything from antiques, paintings, memorabilia, books, tools and ceramics to live poultry, bedding plants, fresh fruit and vegetables, olives, herbs and spices, artisan cheeses and chorizo—plus a lot of old tat!

It is the weekly meeting place for the people of Estremoz, attracting not only the townspeople for their weekly catch-up but also those who live in the surrounding countryside and bring their fresh produce to town to sell.

By 14hrs everything is winding down and people start to wander over to their favourite café or restaurant for lunch. Getting a table on at Saturday at this time of day really tests your ability to mingle like a local or forever be a visitor!
