A first for us and what a treat! We were invited A first for us and what a treat! We were invited to join friends in preparing this season’s hand-picked olives in an age-old art of olive pressing – with absolutely no heating, no chemicals and no funny business. The room was filled with the most incredible, rich scent and the finished result is pure, intense, organic virgin olive oil. We followed the whole process from the land to the (almost) finished product turning beautiful olives into liquid gold. Soup Fest! Despite the heavy rain we made it to t Soup Fest! Despite the heavy rain we made it to this weekend’s São Martinho celebrations put on by the Associaçao dos Amigos da Terceira Idade in São Bento do Ameixial. Part of the event included a ‘Soup Competition’ and no-one makes soups like the Portuguese🍵 Featuring 11 traditional Alentejo soups made by women from the village – we managed to try 7 of the 11! With two helpings of some, we were truly ‘souped out’ by the end. Favourites included Sopa de Tomate, Grão com Espinafres and two we had not tried before: Sopa da Pedra and Ervilhas com Ovos…yummy! I was hoping to pick up a couple of recipes, but alas these are closely guarded secrets – but we did get to go home with a souvenir bowl.
