    About Me

I'm Jackie. We recently moved here after spending just one night in the town, and on these pages I would like to share my journey of discovery, experiences of our move, and lots of reasons why you should include Estremoz in your tour of Portugal.

Welcome to Visit Estremoz — a guide in English to things to do in this traditional market town set in the Alentejo region of Portugal 🇵🇹

NEW BLOG: We’re normally not big on aquariums, b NEW BLOG: We’re normally not big on aquariums, but the Fluviário de Mora set on the Praia Fluvial do Gameiro in Cabeção is not far from Estremoz, and combined with a passadiço walk and lunch ‘underwater’ it makes for a great day out!

From colourful coral reefs to the mysterious deep sea, it's a powerful reminder of how important it is to protect our rivers and oceans. Loved learning about the conservation efforts to protect Portugal’s waterways too. 🌎🌊

Today we took time out for a guided visit of the ‘Legacy of Estremoz Clay’ at the municipal museum Prof. Joaquim Vermelho up at the castle. Part of the ‘International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage’, the exhibitions were dedicated to Pottery and in particular Pottery of Estremoz. Firstly, we enjoyed a presentation of Legacy2, a one-year project that mapped out ‘Exploring the role of raw materials in Portuguese ceramic crafts to bring LaPierre’s legacy to the future’, followed by a guided visit of the museum’s permanent exhibition of historical Estremoz pottery pieces and finished up with a live demonstration of a potter at work on the wheel.

We learned what makes #Estremoz clay such a high-quality raw material, about the important olarias and master potters of the town (sadly not one is active today), the different styles and techniques used by these skilled craftsmen…

Local schoolchildren were having a great time making their own clay creations 🥰🏺👩‍🎨
